Another year is almost over. The last group has finished up with their exploration of dance and learned some slick moves. We hope you enjoy this rendition of Honky Tonk Padonkadonk from group one.

The 8th grade has been studying Newton's three laws of motion. Recently they were tasked to create a "Newton Scooter" in an attempt to prove Newton's Third Law of Motion: For each action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

Here are the attempts made by Meaghan, Lucas, Amanda, Sierra, Alex, Logan, and Mallory.

Students were divided into 7 groups: unsaturated fat, saturated fat, trans fat, simple carbohydrates, complex carbohydrates, dietary fiber, and protein.
They needed to develop 5 key points about their nutrient and then write a song, skit or poem to give as a presentation.

For a little bit of fun, I challenged some 7th graders to make a television commercial based on the now famous "I'm a Mac and I'm a PC" advertising campaign. They were to show the power of students enjoying a one-to-one computer advantage with their Mac iBooks, over students that had to go to a computer lab. Thank you Sabba, Jordan, Conor and Casey.

The 8th grade history students have been doing a unit on the Rise of Islam. They studied the beginnings of the religion, shari'ah, the Sunni and Shiite split, how it spread throughout the world, touched on the Crusades, and how Islam impacts the world today. One part of the unit required the students to research a topic, create a presentation, and share it with the class.

As part of our movement class, exercise goals, life time learning objectives, and just 'cause its fun...each CMS student has one quarter of Dance instruction from a local dance instructor. We love you Barbara!.

During Ancient China Studies, the 8th grade learned about some of China's Emperors. One of the assignments was to read a story about an Emperor, determine the qualities of that Emperor, create symbols for those qualities, and then create a robe using those symbols to honor that Emperor. This is the result.

In Mr. Moholland's Adviser/Advisee class, students had to create a comic book. The comic book had to have a hero and a villain, and had to teach a lesson. The students were to use themselves as the hero and makeup a villain. This podcast features the comicbook made by Sabba and Jordan.

Hi, Mr. Randall here, I'm the 7th and 8th grade Social Studies teacher at CMS. This summer I was lucky enough to be a Teacher-Ranger-Teacher. I worked for the National Park Service (NPS) as a Ranger so that I could learn more about the NPS and bring that knowledge back to my school. As part of our Ancient China unit, the 8th grade had to learn the first 6 movements of Tai Chi, and perform them for the 7th grade.

The 7th grade did an activity using casts of artifacts. The artifacts were from the Passamaquoddy people, one of 5 tribes that make up the Wabanaki (Passmaquoddy, Penobscot, MicMac, Mailiseet and Abenaki).

Josh C. created a story using the Wabanaki supernatural being Gluskap to tell a tale about sharing.

Mathew and Conor show off their Lego Robot named Bobert. They created Bobert in Mr. McCormick's Tech Ed class.

The 8th grade recently studied the origins of Hinduism and the Caste System in Ancient India. They were then tasked to create a song (Weird Al Yankovic style). One student recorded her song over the top of the karaoke version. She wanted to remain anonymous, but agreed to share it with all of you. She used GarageBand to record her song.

The 8th grade recently finished reading The Outsiders, by S.E.Hinton. As a final project, they were required to make a podcast compiling the various assignments they had completed. This is the podcast by Tyler, Lucas, Nichole, and Amanda.

CMS won the district soccer championship for the 2008-2009 school year.

The 7th grade has been learning about Wabanaki culture and how they learned using an oral tradition.. They also learned the Wabanaki taught lessons to their young through stories. Gluskap is a Wabanaki legendary being. He appears in many stories that teach lessons to Wabanaki young people. After studying him, Calais students tried to create their own story to tell about Gluskap.

Recently the 8th Grade went on a hike at Shackford Head Trails. This was a part of the Physical Educations program's Life Long physical activities program.

The 7th Grade students from Calais Middle School went to Saint Croix Island International Historic Site to learn about the 1604 attempt by Pierre Dugua to settle the island.

For their Advisor/Advisee class, the Class of 2013 worked on creating and filming "I Believe" statements. As you can see, many of them had their friends help them. This is a sample of their work.

In this episode, Justin H. and Joel L. read aloud some legends of Gluskap, the supernatural being found in many Wabanaki stories.

We had a little time at the end of the year so I allowed the students to pick a topic that was of interest to them. This was Layne C's. The music is not the original track she recorded, it didn't transfer correctly, so I added some generic Garage Band music. Layne's was much better, sorry Layne.

While studying Japan, the 8th grade students created research projects. This one was done by Brook.

This was a piece done by T.B. when we studied the Maine Wabanaki and the results of European contact. The students were required to take the facts we learned and write a script or poem to cover four parts. Pre-contact with Europeans, Initial Contact, Diseases, and Wars. They also had to create background music to go with the four parts in Garage Band. T. searched the internet for the pictures he used.

S.B. created a slide show demonstrating her research on ancient African civilizations. She used Keynote for the slide show, and then we sent it to Garage Band. All of her pictures were taken from the internet.

My 8th Grade History class was studying Hinduism, and the caste system. Then, using Garage Band, they had to create a song to show what they learned. This was one I did to show them what I wanted them to do. I'm using this one as a test to see if I can do this.
